HKBU Business Student Receives Esteemed C.Y. Tung Scholarship for Semester at Sea Global Voyage

Hong Kong – May 23, 2018 – The Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) School of Businessannounced that William Lun Wai Lam, a Year 3BBA Applied Economics student, was awarded the highly competitive and prestigious C.Y. Tung Scholarship. Lam was the only student from Hong Kong that received the US$20,000 award this year.

“I am blessed to have different opportunities to go outside and see the world with strong support from HKBU, like going on a one-year exchange in California last year, attending the Model United Nations Conference in Geneva in March, and taking an internship at the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council in Singapore in the coming summer,” said Lam. “These experiences not only broaden my worldview and enrich my knowledge in different life aspects, but have also become a strong testimony to my motivated and committed character.”

The C.Y. Tung Scholarship honors shipping magnate, C.Y. Tung, who founded the Semester at Sea (SAS) programme in 1963. It’s the world’s first shipboard educational program and emphasises socio-cultural, policy and economic relations between Chinese and American people that prepares the leaders of the future. This year, seven students are selected and HKBU School of Business has produced other winners of the honour over the years.

As the recipient of the C.Y. Tung Scholarship, Lam is planning to embark on the Semester at Sea academic voyage with university students from around the world. The on-board learning platform enables students to learn about a variety of diverse cultures.

The ship is set to embark in Hamburg, Germany on 9 September 2018, and will visit ports of call in Spain, Ghana, South Africa, Mauritius, India, Myanmar, Vietnam, China, Japan, and will disembark in the U.S. on 23 December 2018.

As a high achiever with a heart of gold, Lam recently won other awards from the Model United Nations Conferences held in Hong Kong and Geneva respectively. He has been a volunteer student teacher at the non-profit Summerbridge Hong Kong for years.
