SOLAR POWERED SOLUTIONS PREPARE PUERTO RICANS FOR START OF HURRICANE SEASON

OHorizons Foundation continues providing household level solutions months after Hurricane Maria!

YABUCOA, PUERTO RICO – June 18, 2018 – As the start of the Atlantic hurricane season gets underway, the OHorizons Foundation, an international non-profit focused on developing breakthrough solutions that positively impact the essential daily need for health and wellness, is nearing a dozen humanitarian assistance trips to Puerto Ricans living in rural municipalities, bringing solar-powered illumination and cellular device charging, refrigeration, and short-term energy generation to the hard-hit community of Yabucoa.

Since October 2017, OHorizons’ Shine Bright Puerto Rico program has delivered solutions designed to provide immediate assistance as well as prepare island residents for any future natural disasters. To date, the Shine Bright Puerto Rico efforts, which have been funded through private donations and a Unidos for Puerto Rico grant, have provided home solar lighting and charging systems to over 7,500 residents, water filters for 20,000 residents, thousands of pounds of food providing hundreds of families with nourishment, inflatable solar lights for 1,000 residents, 25 portable generators for bedridden patients, and 2 solar refrigerators for organizations serving orphans and women’s shelters who have been most in need.

OHorizons works in close coordination with grassroots community organizations and local officials, assuring our efforts are complementary to other services and opportunities being provided. We have already successfully provided our lifesaving solutions to people living in numerous municipalities around the island, including Rio Grande, Punta Santiago, Humacao, Utuado, Loiza, Jayuya, Morovis, Yabucoa, and many others.

Nine months after Hurricane Maria and Irma devastated the beautiful island of Puerto Rico, this humanitarian crisis continues to be particularly devastating for remote rural communities that were initially cut off from the rest of the island by bridge collapses or the destruction of vital infrastructure, and more recently have had vital services restored at an incredibly delayed pace. Like most of the island, the majority of rural citizens are dealing with regular brown outs and blackouts. OHorizons has focused on solutions that have been designed to provide stop-gap solutions while overall, long-term solutions are deployed.
